The Women’s Section in the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir
Why are Secular Governments Obsessed with the Hijab?

The Muslim woman’s dress, whether the Khimar, the jilbab or the Niqab is never far from the media or political spotlight within secular states. Various accusations have been thrown at it by secular journalists, feminists, politicians and governments – in the east and the west - who have labelled it a “symbol of oppression”. Consequently, hijab and niqab bans have been enforced in various secular states. Last month, the Islamic dress was once again propelled into the headlines when French MP’s exited an inquiry being held in the French parliament in protest of a Muslim woman wearing the Khimar who was giving evidence at the hearing.

This panel discussion will explore why secular politicians and governments hold such animosity towards the Islamic dress of the woman, examine the validity of the accusations made against it, and address how Muslims should respond to attacks against the Muslim woman’s dress.”
