A delegation from Hizb ut Tahrir/ Wilayah Lebanon, headed by the Head of the Central Communications Committee, Dr. Muhammad Jaber along with other members of the party visited the Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi last month to present an open letter to remind them of the harmonious relationship between the Muslims and Christians, and the work of the Hizb as well as the vision for not only Lebanon but the surrounding regions.

Islam and historical facts proves that the connection between the Muslims and Christians date way back from the time of Prophet Muhammad (saw) and since then it has been of harmony and amicability. Non-Muslim citizens living under the Islamic system – Khilafah - were referred to as Dhimmi. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

« قال: ألا من ظلم معاهداً أو انتقصه أو كلفه فوق طاقته أو أخذ منه شيئاً بغير طيب نفس فأنا حجيجه يوم القيامة »

“He who harms a person under covenant, or charged him more than he can, I will argue against him on the Day of Judgement.”

So we see that their places of worship, lives, and property were always protected and they were not persecuted and discriminated against for their beliefs. When Umar (ra) entered Bilad Al Sham and documented a pact with the non-Muslims of Jerusalem, the terms of the treaty reflected the beauty and status that Islam gives non-Muslim minorities as a whole and is a reflection of the general teachings of Islam regarding them. It ‘guarantees them protection of life and property, of the churches. They should be subjected to no compulsion in matters of faith, nor shall they be in any way molested.’

The classical scholars of Islam also detailed the rights of the Muslims towards the dhimmi. The famous Maliki jurist, Shihab al-Deen al-Qarafi said:

“The covenant of protection imposes upon us certain obligations toward the ahl al-dhimmah. They are our neighbours, under our shelter and protection upon the guarantee of Allah, His Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace), and the religion of Islam. Whoever violates these obligations against any one of them by so much as an abusive word, by slandering his reputation, or by doing him some injury or assisting in it, has breached the guarantee of Allah, His Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace), and the religion of Islam.”

The British historian T. W. Arnold in his book, The Preaching of Islam, wrote regarding the treatment of non-Muslims who lived under the Uthmani Khilafah, “...though the Greeks were numerically superior to the Turks in all European provinces of the empire, the religious toleration thus granted them, and the protection of life and property they enjoyed, soon reconciled them to prefer the domination of the Sultan to that of any Christian power”.

The good treatment of the Islamic Caliphate during various eras to its non-Muslim nationals allowed them to truly enjoy the justice and impartiality that Islam gives to the whole of mankind and today we see that their centres and places of worship that are wide-spread in Muslim countries attest to this.

We send a sincere message to the people of the Scriptures reminding them of the relationship we had and Insha’Allah will always have - where we, the Muslims, wish to continue providing the care and trust we once did and ensured their security. We ask them to support our call to bring back the Islamic Khilafah system and not allow the evil plots and plans of the secular west cause fear in their hearts and minds against political Islam. The West only wishes to further its agenda of reaping the economic benefits and seizing full control of the Muslim lands. They give no value for religion at all, whether it is Islam, Christianity or Judaism. It is for this reason, we ask them be aware of the conspiracies to use them as an obstacle in the way of the establishment of Islam.

We ask Allah (swt) to bring back the speedy return of the Khilafah Rashida and for mankind to witness the justice and equity that Islam promises. Ameen
