Debate on Appropriate Medium of Instruction Must Ingrained with Ideology

In the event of the National Mwalimu Nyerere Creative Awards held in 14 April 2026 at Dar es Salaam, the long running debate about the Kiswahili language being a suitable medium for teaching in schools has resurfaced.

In this regard, we in Hizb ut Tahrir / Tanzania would like to say the following:

1. Confining debate on the issue of language only without being ingrained with an ideological angle is a shallow perspective. Since people do not revive from the type of language of instruction, but by adoption on ideology that provides systems with solutions that would give them vision, a sense of independence and solutions to all problems in life. Through that ideology a stable mechanism would be in place to safeguard and protect that particular ideology internally and externally.

2. In spite of the vitality of languages in communication, yet language by itself is not an ideology, its role is a secondary one, as a tool of that particular ideology. So engaging in debate on the issue of language only, without incorporating it with an ideological foundation is flaw, fruitless and a distraction from the main issue.

3. At this time where capitalist nations especially the USA and its ideology is vividly exposed from its evil in exploitation of other nations of the world including Tanzania to the extent of destabilizing world peace and pushing the world economy in disarray from their greediness of oil, while on the other hand being regarded as proponents of democracy, a productive debate should be on an alternate ideology for the failure of capitalism.

We call upon intellectuals, enlightened thinkers and all people of wisdom to come forward on this productive ideological debate that would save the nations of the world especially developing countries and humanity from current oppressive and exploitative capitalist democracy under guise of freedom, human rights, international norms and laws, etc.
