 Nafsiya Reflections: A Safety Net

Welcome to another episode of Nafsiya Reflections - Safety Net.

Ever since Covid made its debut every one of us has felt its hit in some way. It hit us at home, constrained by our own walls, it hit us at work, having to social distance, and it hit us with our loved ones, who we worry about, constantly. It’s not easy. It’s frustrating. It’s hard. It’s hard when our businesses take the plunge, all the while supporting our family, wondering how we are going to get next week’s meals on the table. While some of us have gone through a severe cut in our family’s income, just to survive. While others have lost their jobs completely. We worry... wondering when is it going to be our turn or when we will run out of money to survive, or to afford our basic needs? It’s hard. For a lot of us don’t have that safety net, and losing our jobs would be the last straw.

See some of us may have something to fall back on. Have some money given to us from the government. Money that can barely cover our monthly income. Money given to us to keep our heads above water. The main priority here is not our health, or our needs as human beings, but rather is to ensure the economic activity is not impacted too much. And that is the only safety we may be able to get our hands on. This makes us lose hope. Hope in being able to survive under these circumstances. Losing hope in finding a way out of all the problems we are facing on an individual, economic and social level. Becoming desperate for the change we cannot possibly attain individually.

Losing hope in the governments that are supposed to have our best interest, to look out for us, to take care of us in all aspects of life. Right? Isn’t that what a government is supposed to do? Take care of all the needs of its people? Isn’t the government meant to provide welfare and dependability in life? But we don’t see that. Not in all the aspects at least. We have lost hope. We have lost hope in our governments. We have lost hope in our lives. Before I go any further... Let us be clear that Allah SWT is The Only One who can help us. The Only Provider. The Only One who can suffice us. Allah SWT is The Protector and is The ONLY One who will bring us any relief. Who will make everything right, when it’s time. For Only with His permission will anything be.

The prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said,

On the authority of Abu Abbas Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: One day I was behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) [riding on the same mount] and he said, “O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone]. And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.” [at-Tirmidhi]

That does not mean that we plainly give up. To sit by and watch our world fall apart, quite literally I may add, telling ourselves “this is from Allah” and that “He will protect us.” We can’t sit by watching others control our lives in such a way. Standing still... paralyzed... as we tell ourselves “We can’t afford this right now” as we wait for our next paycheck, or worrying that we may lose that paycheck all together.

See our only hope is in Islam being applied through the Khilafah, Caliphate. It is the only system on earth that can protect our lives, and not only that, but can give us the opportunities to live lives not merely with basic necessities, but it is the only way we can finally live our lives to their full potential. To challenge ourselves. To have opportunities without financial restrictions in healthcare, education, or our basic needs but rather will give us a platform to excel in life without the constant worry about sustaining a safety net.

All under the Mercy of Allah first, then under a righteous, God fearing, khaleefah who will unify all Muslims, from the east to the west, as one. To lead us to become the ummah we have always been. To guard us, to secure our lives no matter what we face. The Muslim Ummah that will be an example to the world. The leaders, in all areas of life. So let’s not sit back and watch as our lives are taken from us. Being constant victims. Help in bringing back the second rightly guided Khilafah, Caliphate, on the method of the Prophethood. Work with Hizb ut Tahrir so that we aren’t watching our lives or the lives of others slowly crumble around us, but rather live fulfilling lives in this Dunya and the Akhirah, the afterlife. Work with us to make an impact. To make change. To finally see change. To be change. Good change. So that our lives and lives of the following generations are not spent constantly swimming to keep our heads above water, but to be the ones who will help others by throwing them the lifesaver, by providing all who need it a safety net. A safety net we can all finally depend on.
