Nafsiya Reflections: The Ummah Still has Goodness!

Welcome to another episode of Nafsiya Reflection: Ummah Still has Goodness!

It was this little boy, who is now in the Heavens of Allah (swt), that showed the true colors of the Ummahs’ unity no matter the differences, race, groups or geographical locations. The constant supplications made for Rayan, prayer, chanting, “Allahu Akhbar” for this boy.

Rayan Oram was a five-year-old Moroccan boy who was trapped in a well for four days. The boy fell into the 32 meter (104 feet) well while his father was repairing the well. A camera was inserted into the well where it showed the images of Rayan where sympathy and compassion was shown for the boy and parents. We saw hashtags all over SM. Some newscasts had around the clock coverage. People from all over came out to show their support, prayed, and chanted “Allahu Akbar” at the site. People from all walks of life came together in Duaa and shared the Hashtag. We as an Ummah showed emotional solidarity.

Many were impressed how the Ummah came together in solidarity. An image in which the media portrayed to the Ummah that people became immune, numb to the continuous bloodshed of the Ummah or children being trapped in rubble in Syria, Yemen, Gaza, etc. The question is has the Ummah really become numb? Does the Ummah still have goodness (Khair) towards one another? We saw from Rayan how people came together. What about the people of Syria, Yemen, Gaza, Afghanistan, etc?

Solidarity was shown to the children of Syria in the refugee camps that have died due to the extreme cold. We saw an example of an unidentified man from Palestine donating thousands of dollars to the Syrian people living in the refugee camps, doing away from the camera's attention. The many including the women who have donated their gold for our brothers and sisters of Syria picked up the slack or our ruthless governments. Our rulers spend millions for their ventures that show interest to them but turn a blind eye towards our brothers and sisters that are starving as we see in Yemen and Afghanistan. We have seen many times people donate but this does not get the media attention. This is our true reality!

The regimes do not want to show the goodness the Ummah still has for each other. It wants to show people are overwhelmed with their problems, the selfishness, or individualism that was embedded in the Ummah due to Colonization. The reality of the Ummah showed the out-pour of sympathy and emotional support for Rayan and his family.

It is due to the colonialists’ efforts that tried to make the people of our Ummah numb to what is shown in the media. People became hungry to show sympathy to feel again, to unite rather than dispute. The true character of the Ummah would be a shining light to the rest of the world if there was a true Islamic leadership that united the Ummah into one, if boundaries were removed, if Islam were implemented into our daily lives. We, the Ummah, would be the envy of other nations.

The Messenger (saw) said:

" تَرَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي تَرَاحُمِهِمْ وَتَوَادِّهِمْ وَتَعَاطُفِهِمْ كَمَثَلِ الْجَسَدِ إِذَا اشْتَكَى عُضْوًا تَدَاعَى لَهُ سَائِرُ جَسَدِهِ بِالسَّهَرِ وَالْحُمَّى  "

“The faithful in their mutual amiability, compassion and empathy are like one body— when one part of this body is sick; the rest of the body responds in insomnia and fever”...

The Ummah did respond with compassion to our dear brothers and sisters who have lost their children due to the bombings, killings, severe cold, or the child who was playing then fell into the well. The Hadeeth of the Prophet that said:

Abu Huraira said that a man who told him a son of his had died and that he was grieved asked him if he had heard anything from his friend which would comfort them regarding their dead. He replied that he had, for hehad heard him say, “Their young ones roam freely in paradise. One of them meets his father, seizes the end of his garment and does not leave him until he brings him into paradise."

We make sincere Duaa that Allah (swt) seals the hearts of Rayan’s parents and loved ones with patience like He (swt) Did with Musa’s (as) mother...

May a righteous leader rise again like the Khulafah Rashideen who were the protectors towards their Ummah. May we be from the ones who live under the Shade of the Khilafah to feel and be part of the true solidarity of the Ummah!
