All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the most honorable of Messengers, our master and beloved Muhammad (saw), and upon his family, his companions, and those who follow his path until the Day of Judgment.
Dear brothers,
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
Many people these days ask why Sudan is always living through successive crises, especially in the economic sphere, despite possessing visible and hidden resources that should make it one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
This question arises amid the severe deterioration in people's living conditions due to the erosion of the value of the Sudanese pound, which has continued to decline rapidly, especially in recent times, until one US dollar became equivalent to approximately 4,700 Sudanese pounds on the parallel market, and perhaps even more.
This deterioration has been reflected in goods and services, whose prices have risen to extreme levels, making life unbearable. Obtaining even a single meal a day has become a distant dream for many families.
To answer this question, it is necessary to understand the root of the problem and explain its fundamental solution. The basis of the problem lies in the following:
1.The economic system in Sudan is built upon a capitalist foundation that is not based on care and responsibility for people, but rather on capitalist utilitarianism. It focuses on increasing wealth without concern for distribution. As a result, wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Its application in our country has taken the worst possible form. Colonial powers, through the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, control economic policy in order to plunder the country's resources. They demand that our rulers refrain from spending on people's essential needs such as health, education, and security, while promoting the privatization of the public sector for the benefit of capitalism.
They also demand the floating of the local currency, causing it to collapse in value, as is happening today. Many Western thinkers themselves, who subscribe to the capitalist ideology, have acknowledged its corruption. The prominent economist Michael Hudson, in his book,The Corruption of Capitalism, explains how profiteers and rent-seekers dominate the economic system and drain society.
2.Since the system itself is corrupt, it produces corrupt individuals who care only about their own interests and not the affairs of the people. This became evident in the recent crisis when demand for dollars increased to purchase fuel. The dollar itself became a commodity, with companies and individuals competing to acquire it. On Friday, 12 June 2026, the government announced its intention to enter the fuel-import business, only to reverse the decision two days later and allow companies to import fuel provided they deposited 200 kilograms of 21-carat gold as a guarantee. This confirms the influence of powerful interests acting for the benefit of certain companies.
3. Whenever a problem occurs, the government seeks to address its symptoms rather than its real causes. Consequently, problems become more complicated until they develop into crises and even multiple crises. We saw how, when the Sudanese pound first began declining, the government banned the import of dozens of goods on the pretext that they consumed dollars, yet conditions only worsened.
4. Gold is smuggled out of the country in quantities amounting to tens of tons, and its revenues end up in private pockets rather than benefiting either the state or the people. This occurs despite gold being public property, whose mines should not be privately owned by individuals or companies. The Minister of Finance acknowledged that Sudan produced approximately 70 tons of gold in 2025, of which only 20 tons entered state coffers, while 50 tons served personal interests.
Taken together, these causes contribute to the dismantling of the state in favor of projects serving the colonial West.
The fundamental solution to the economic crisis in Sudan—and indeed throughout the world, consists of the following:
First: Establishing an economic system based upon a correct creed and just solutions. This can only come from the All-Knowing, the All-Aware. Therefore, the Islamic economic system must be implemented. It guarantees the complete satisfaction of every citizen's basic needs—food, clothing, and housing.
The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: «مَنْ أَصْبَحَ مِنْكُمْ آمِنًا فِي سِرْبِهِ، مُعَافًى فِي جَسَدِهِ، عِنْدَهُ قُوتُ يَوْمِهِ، فَكَأَنَّمَا حِيزَتْ لَهُ الدُّنْيَا»“Whoever among you wakes up secure in his dwelling, healthy in his body, and possessing his day's provision, it is as though the whole world has been gathered for him.”(Jami' at-Tirmidhi)
The Islamic system also enables people to satisfy their supplementary needs as much as possible. Through its legal rulings, it prevents the hoarding of wealth so that it does not remain concentrated among the rich. ]كَيْ لَا يَكُونَ دُولَةً بَيْنَ الْأَغْنِيَاءِ مِنْكُمْ] "So that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you.” [Al-Hashr: 7].
Islam also prohibits monopolies, indirect taxes, and unlawful levies, so they do not become causes of rising prices for goods and services.
The Prophet (saw) said: «مَنْ دَخَلَ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ أَسْعَارِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ لِيُغَلِّيَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُقْعِدَهُ بِعُظْمٍ مِنَ النَّارِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ»“Whoever interferes with the prices of the Muslims in order to raise them against them, it is a duty upon Allah to seat him on a great bone of the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.”(Reported in Musnad Ahmad)
Second:The currency should be based upon gold because it possesses intrinsic value. Trade with the world, both imports and exports, should be conducted on this basis. Besides its stability and security, many Islamic rulings are linked to gold, including blood-money compensation, the threshold for the punishment of theft, and the zakah on monetary wealth. Sudan is a country rich in gold and therefore does not need usurious loans or any similar dependence.
Third:Relations with the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and other interest-based financial institutions must be completely severed, and Islamic rulings concerning the acquisition, development, and expenditure of wealth must be implemented.
Fourth:The state is not permitted to dispose of public property such as gold, petroleum, and inexhaustible mineral resources through sale, gifting, or other means. Its duty is only to supervise these resources on behalf of the Ummah as a whole because they are the right of the Ummah and must be spent for its welfare.
In summary, these rulings and the other rulings of Islam are what provide people with a dignified life. There is no salvation for us from this miserable reality except through sincere work with the devoted sons and daughters of the Ummah who are striving to restore it as a Khilafah Rashidah (Rightly Guided Caliphate) on the method of Prophethood, by which we seek the pleasure of our Lord and live under its shade with honor and dignity.
Wassalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
