Lebanese President Joseph Aoun held official talks with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas during the latter’s official visit to Lebanon at the invitation of the Lebanese government. The meeting took place at Baabda Palace and addressed several issues related to bilateral relations and regional developments, most notably the situation in Gaza, the Palestinian refugee issue in Lebanon, and the stability of the refugee camps.

The joint statement issued by both sides emphasized the deep historical ties between the two peoples, and affirmed their shared support for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question, guaranteeing the Palestinian people the establishment of their independent state based on international law.

In the security sphere, both sides expressed a clear commitment to the principle of the Lebanese state’s monopoly on the use of force and rejected any armed presence outside the framework of the law. They also stressed the importance of strengthening coordination between Lebanese and Palestinian authorities to ensure stability within the refugee camps, a commitment to refrain from using Lebanese territory for any military operations, and cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism. The Palestinian president’s visit comes at a critical juncture, its primary objective being to discuss the issue of weapons within Palestinian refugee camps. This comes amidst an official Lebanese move to extend state sovereignty over all its territory and end the phenomenon of weapons outside the authority of the legitimate government, as part of a broader process that began with the implementation of the ceasefire agreement with the Jewish entity late last year.

Under the pretext that the only legitimate weapons are those of the state, the Lebanese state, in cooperation with the traitor Abbas — who has experience and a track record in this field — is pursuing the remaining weapons held by resistance factions in the refugee camps in Lebanon. This is all to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the Jewish entity, and for Lebanon to later join the club of countries normalizing relations with the entity and participating in the Abraham Accords.
