Pearls of Wisdom by Ibn Taymiyyah: “If I remained silent and you remained silent, then who will teach the ignorant?”

IBN T A Y M I Y Y A H, may Allah (swt) have mercy upon him, was born in Harran, an old city within the Arabian Peninsula between Syria and Iraq, on the tenth or the twelfth of the month Rabi al-Awwal the year 661H. He and his family were later forced to flee to Damascus due to the occupation by the Tartars. He came from a family of scholars. At an early age he amazed his teachers at the strength of his memory, keen intelligence and depth of understanding. Ibn Taymiyyah was one of the greatest scholars in which his knowledge still lives on till this day. The Ummah Voice Podcast presents our audience a segment of his quotes during the holy month of Ramadan.

One famous quote of Ibn Taymiyyah is: “If I remained silent and you remained silent, then who will teach the ignorant?”

Ignorance is treacherous to society. Ignorance is what allows people to be taken advantage, at times oppressed, and remain shackled to ongoing detrimental situations.

There is a duty to teach the people in society, to widen their eyes, guide the people to beneficial knowledge and wisdom. One should remain silent because remaining silent will not change the ignorant. One needs to awaken the people of current realities, knowledge, the state of our Ummah, and the solution to the Ummah’s misery and ongoing onslaught. We must not forget "Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil," which is a command by Allah (swt). There needs to be among the people ones who will not remain silent but to teach the people, to get out their comfort zones, and not remain idle. We must not remain ignorant but open our eyes to our reality and learn the Quran and Sunnah. We, as an Ummah should not be shackled to our comfort zone.
